Course Description

For a project leader who doesn't have direct reports, is a coercive or directive leadership style ever appropriate? In some situations, it's not only helpful for a project leader, but necessary; for example, when people's safety is at risk, it's necessary for a leader to be clear and directive. Sometimes there's no benefit to standing around and taking a vote. Under what circumstances will you need to consult others and invite their input? How might that influence people's level of engagement with their work and with the team? And finally, when do you need to step back and let others figure things out on their own? In this lesson, you will explore three styles of leadership: autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire, as well as the attributes that each has to offer. Finally, you will examine some situations in which there are greater advantages to be had from soliciting team input and discussion.
