Course Description

Conflict is usually driven by differing interests. We often present these differing interests by stating our position. One person may state that he wants to divide work and spend limited time working collaboratively. Another might suggest spending time working together to brainstorm and outline, as well as time together after working independently. A problem-solving approach can help you analyze both parties' initial positions and interests. In this lesson, you will engage in the initial stages of the problem-solving approach; recognizing each party's initial positions and underlying interests. You will create a list of criteria that can be used in evaluating the potential success of any solution options that are generated. This step is critical to the success of the problem-solving approach. You will also have access to activites where you will practice considering and identifying solution criteria.

Benefits to the Learner

  • Explore one of the keys to the problem-solving approach: considering both parties' initial positions and the interests underlying them
