Course Description

Bats are mammals but their unique biology presents situations where creative thinking and careful observation are essential to coming up with solutions to their injuries and illnesses. This talk covers a handful of tough cases that have required thinking outside the box to come up with diagnoses and treatments. How do you set a broken jaw smaller than a tic tac, or pin a bone not much bigger than a toothpick? How can you wrap a limb that is surrounded by a wing? What are signs of white-nose syndrome and can you treat it? If time permits, the talk will also go over some odd cases, some resolved and some not. These include cases of metabolic bone disease in pups, capture myopathy, systemic inflammation, swollen joints, hair loss, and even depression.
