Course Description

This session will serve as an overview of two commonly diagnosed equine endocrine conditions, Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID) and Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS), as well as a summary of equine reproductive hormone testing and its application in the diagnosis of cryptorchidism in geldings, granulosa cell tumors in mares and the monitoring of pregnancy. We will discuss the challenges of equine endocrine testing and tips for success. Highlights from new literature will be included throughout the session. We will review the current and evolving diagnostic and management strategies for EMS and PPID in horses, and include PPID and EMS pathophysiology, diagnostic approach and interpretation, treatment and prevention. The content will cover the ‘need to know’ information for practitioners managing equine EMS and PPID cases. The last third of the session will feature an equine endocrinology question and answer session led by panelists with expertise in equine endocrinology, theriogenology and internal medicine.
