Course Description

Understanding the structure and function of the ear is the best way to prepare for proper diagnosis and management of otitis externa and media. In this session, we’ll focus on the anatomy and physiology of the external ear canal, talk a little about the middle ear, and then discuss the pathophysiology of otitis externa; this is super important and also strongly relevant to proper management of animals with ear disease! Then we’ll introduce the concept of best practices and how they relate to managing otitis in animals.

Benefits to the Learner

  • Describe how the structure and function directly impacts management of otitis
  • Describe the anatomic, physiologic and mechanical changes in otitis that impact treatment
  • Be able to describe the “best practices” for managing otitis externa
