Course Description

The increasing cultural, racial, and ethnic diversity of pet owners, especially in light of ongoing efforts to dismantle systemic racism and build equity, calls for veterinarians to acknowledge and accept the implications of the evolving clientele in clinical practice. The diversifying pet owner demographic brings about perspectives on the human-animal bond and veterinary care that may be different from the historically homogenous pet owner demographic. To be culturally competent and inclusive of all populations, it is critical that the veterinary team recognizes when culture influences deviations from the norm in terms of pet ownership. The veterinary team should be ready to embrace and accommodate the specific needs of both pet and owner of any background. Clinical scenarios where an individual’s cultural beliefs present a barrier in providing standard of care treatment will be presented. Through these scenarios, we will discuss how appropriate client communication and identifying creative alternatives are key tools in achieving cultural competence in practice.
