Course Description

Surveillance is a powerful tool to monitor, prevent and control infectious diseases. Veterinarians play varied and important roles in infectious and zoonotic disease surveillance. As COVID-19 demonstrates, countries and disciplines need to work together to effectively respond to human, animal or environmental health threats in a globalized world. The One Health approach is an opportunity to strengthen public health surveillance systems and is being utilized in varied ways around the globe. This session will provide a brief history of public health surveillance, present examples of One Health zoonotic disease surveillance and highlight some new approaches being used for disease surveillance in developing countries.
