Course Description

When serving low-income clients, patient management using incremental veterinary care (IVC) involves specific considerations that may not be a factor when serving middle-income clients with the funds or access to credit. Key considerations include limited funds and the ability of the client to comply with the treatment plan. The client gets presented with various treatment options, and it is essential to document this communication in the medical record. In some instances, a third party, e.g., a human support coordinator or veterinary social worker, may help communicate with the client. The IVC Decision Tree may facilitate communications and patient management. Panelists will discuss their experiences using IVC to manage patients, including critical decision points. As providers in the AlignCare network, they understand that if a diagnostic test will not change their opinion of the patient's needs, AlignCare does not cover the diagnostic test. When considering therapy, it is essential to ask yourself, "Will this treatment change the outcome? If so, how? Is the justification valid? Is the test critical to making the right treatment decision?" These are decisions associated with doing something to avoid not being able to help or euthanizing the patient.
