Course Description

Choose a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life. Ironically, this adage does not apply to the service animal, defined as a dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability, who was never given the choice in the first place. Therein lies our obligation to ensure these extraordinary animals do, in fact, love their jobs and purpose in life. At minimum, they should always remain safe from the daily risks encountered when assisting individuals with disabilities. In this presentation, we will follow the day in the life of a service dog, revealing the rewards and challenges that accompany their vital task of giving freedom and function to an individual with a disability. This unique glimpse into the life of a service dog reveals the opportunities for veterinarians to assure the welfare of these animals is held in the highest regard.
