Course Description

This case-based master class is intended for small animal primary care veterinarians with a special interest in pain management and will combine lecture and group discussion formats. Participants will develop pain management plans for several actual patients seen at the Cornell University Hospital for Animals for intractable chronic pain. The class will focus on management of neuropathic pain and pain secondary to end-stage neoplasia and degenerative diseases. Locoregional anesthetic techniques that can be utilized in private practice to supplement systemic analgesics will be discussed.

  • Be able to recognize clinical signs of chronic pain and how to utilize pain scales to assess pain severity and response to treatment
  • Review the analgesic drugs currently available for home administration to dogs and cats with moderate-to-severe chronic pain and the data supporting or refuting the use of each
  • Learn locoregional techniques that can be performed in private practice for moderate-to-severe chronic pain
