Course Description

The diagnostic importance of ultrasonography in camelid medicine cannot be emphasised enough. In the author’s practice, abdominal ultrasound is used as an extension of the physical examination in all sick camelids but especially in adult animals. It is particularly useful in evaluation of the camelid abdomen since external and internal palpation have limited usefulness due to the presence of the forestomachs and the smaller size of the patients as compared with cattle and horses. Ultrasonography may also be used in evaluation of externally palpable masses prior to aspiration, as a guide for centesis of the abdominal or thoracic cavities, or to guide biopsy of internal organs, as well as for evaluation of the thorax in certain cases and for echocardiography. Clearly, ultrasound is also useful in reproductive applications but will not be discussed here.

Benefits to the Learner

  • Recognize the diagnostic importance of ultrasound in abdominal and thoracic disease
