Course Description

Neonatal crias can be the most rewarding patients to treat if you know how to approach them. In this presentation, we will distill the list of differential diagnoses into 4 main groups of problems and how to recognize them. Some problems are common to all species of neonate. However, congenital problems are important to be able to recognize and there are a number of conditions that are not generally seen in other domestic species. We will discuss the clinical conditions and how to correct the problems where appropriate (for non-breeding purposes). Failure of passive transfer is a problem of significant importance in camelids and this presentation will go into detail about critical care of sick neonates in the field. We will use clinical case examples to enhance understanding and to illustrate case management.
