Course Description

Recently there has been a growing awareness of inequitable access to veterinary care by marginalized groups. Dismantling structural barriers to care requires an understanding of issues that are meaningful for people in BIPOC communities. Working with marginalized communities requires veterinarians to be respectful of pet owners, examine their own implicit biases and assumptions. Providers of veterinary care will need to meet the owners where they are and to foster relationships that eventually lead to trust. Working with trusted liaisons within the community can help build bridges between community members and the veterinary community.
