Course Description

Most llama and alpaca crias will be born without complication and survive the neonatal period without problems. However, it is important to be able to recognize what is normal, how they are managed, and which crias are likely to be at risk of complications so that you are best able to advise owners and take the correct course of action if required. Neonatal crias can be the most rewarding patients to treat if you know how to approach them. It is important to appreciate the interference points at which veterinary care is required, but to be proactive in assessment and in taking steps to prevent problems developing for those crias at risk. We will discuss the clinical assessment of camelid neonates and the use and interpretation of further diagnostics such as bloodwork.
