Course Description

When you are trying to accomplish something, your focus naturally tends to shift to the outcome: "Did I get the thing done or not?" Thinking of an outcome in terms of a change in power is a broader view. The questions in this case might be, “Does getting this thing done put me in a stronger position?” Or, “What political capital did I have to expend in order to make this thing happen?” In this lesson, you focus on resources and examine the different sources of power that help you gain access to the resources you need. Of the five sources discussed, you will see how four of them (expertise, reward, coercion, and referent power) are, to some extent, under your control. You also see how the fifth source, power based on position in a hierarchy, should not be overused.
