Course Description

Most people are good at making a reasonable guess as to why someone may have behaved a certain way. We see a behavior and we quickly jump to a conclusion as to why the person behaved that way. And most of us are roughly accurate in our guess, making us feel like we understand the person we are observing. But the problem is that most people are also terrible at updating their initial guess. We code our initial guess as the truth, and it’s very difficult for us to change our mind when new, relevant information comes in. As a leader, you need to be more flexible in your thinking so that you are more accurate and efficient at attributing causes to behavior. In this lesson, you will learn how to become more flexible in your thinking so that you are able to update your guesses when new information comes in. You will learn about social influence and situational constraints as major drivers of behavior, and then learn to recognize those drivers in a series of activities.

Benefits to the Learner

  • Determine how to improve your ability to understand others’ behavior by recognizing their fundamental drivers of behavior
  • Consider social influence and situational constraints as major drivers of behavior
  • Practice hypothesizing about the causes of behaviors you observe in your work environment
