Course Description

Present in all cultures, poetry employs language in surprising and sometimes baffling ways in order to evoke feelings or express ideas. In this program we'll immerse ourselves in poetry as we strive to understand what it is, what it communicates, and how it should be read.

Faculty Author

Originally from Arkansas, Charlie Green joined the faculty at Cornell in 2010. His debut collection of poems, Feral Ornamentals, will be published by Finishing Line Press in March 2021. His writing has appeared or is forthcoming in Image Journal, The Southeast Review, The New England Review, and other venues. Charlie earned his PhD in English at the University of Cincinnati and his MA in English at the University of Missouri.

Benefits to the Learner

Under the direction of esteemed writing instructor Charles Green, we'll move away from trying to "get" poems and toward experiencing them, in both formal and free verse.

Through discussions and daily writing, we’ll explore what makes a poem a poem and how to take pleasure in reading poetry.
