Course Description

If you love animals and are considering a career as a veterinarian, farmer, zookeeper, trainer, or pet-shelter technician, this course will introduce you to the training, skills, and responsibilities required to work in the profession. You’ll explore veterinary public health and preventive medicine, animal welfare and clinical ethics, and the human-animal bond and its implications for husbandry and medicine.

Laci Taylor is a fourth-year veterinary student at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. Originally from the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, Laci attended Cornell University for undergrad where she majored in Animal Science on a pre-veterinary track. Currently, Laci’s veterinary interests are captive wildlife management, aquatic animal medicine, conservation and public health.  While at Cornell Vet, Laci has spent her time working as a wildlife student technician, tour guide and student ambassador and serves on the Student American Veterinary Medical Association’s (SAVMA) National Team as the International Exchange Officer. She also founded two student clubs – the Cornell Chapter of the World Aquatic Veterinary Medical Association and the Cornell Chapter of BlackDVM Network. Upon graduation, Laci would like to pursue a small animal rotating internship to further develop her clinical skills followed by additional training in wildlife/zoological medicine. Outside of veterinary medicine, Laci spends her time hiking, camping, fishing and traveling.

Djion A Holness is a first generation, Jamacan American student hailing from New York. After receiving her Bachelor of Science, in Animal Science from the University of Connecticut in 2018, she embarked on her professional educational path as a class of 2023 DVM candidate here at Cornell. She currently serves as the Cornell Student American Veterinary Medical Association (SAVMA) Chapter Sr. Delegate, the Veterinarians as One Inclusive Community for Empowerment (VOICE) secretary, the Small Animal Clinical Skills Treasurer and a CVM Student Ambassador. Her professional interests include small animal emergency medicine, public health through advocacy and leadership and shelter medicine. Djion enjoys singing, dancing, painting and being in nature during her free time. She is a dedicated advocate for underrepresented groups within veterinary medicine, and STEM.
